Plerixafor is a medicine used with G-CSF prior to an autologous stem cell transplant in patients with multiple myeloma or non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Plerixafor is also being studied in the treatment of certain other types of cancer. Plerixafor is designed to help move stem cells from the bone marrow to the blood so they can be stored, collected, and then returned back to the patient. It is a type of hematopoietic stem cell mobilizer.
Initiate treatment with Plerixafor 24 mg/1.2 mL (20 mg/mL) after the patient has taken G-CSF once daily for 4 days. Administer Plerixafor injection approximately 11 hours before initiating each apheresis for up to four (4) successive days.
The recommended dose of Plerixafor by subcutaneous injection is based on body weight:
Renal impairment: In case creatinine clearance is ≤50 mL/min, reduce the dose by one-third to 0.16 mg/kg.
The most common plerixafor side effects are diarrhea, headache, nausea, injection site reactions, arthralgia, fatigue, dizziness, and vomiting.
Findings suggest that plerixafor injection 20 mg/ml can cause fetal harm if used by a pregnant woman. Pregnant women of reproductive age or potential should use an appropriate form of contraception during therapy with plerixafor and for 7 days after the final dose.
