Tigecycline injection is a tetracycline-class antibiotic that is used in individuals over the age of 18 for:Â
The suggested way to use Tigecycline injection is to start with 100 mg, then take 50 mg every 12 hours. The injection should be given into a vein slowly over 30-60 minutes every 12 hours. Treatment length with tigecycline for complicated skin infections or complicated belly infections is usually 5-14 days. For community-acquired pneumonia, treatment typically lasts 7-14 days. The duration of treatment depends on how severe the infection is and how the patient is doing, both medically and with regards to the infection itself.
Common side effects in over 5% of patients given the 50 mg tigecycline injection include:
Tigecycline 50 mg injection should not be used if patients are known to be sensitive to this drug.
Patients who show unusual liver function tests while on tigecycline need to be checked to see if their liver function is getting worse, and the decision to continue the treatment should be carefully considered.
Using tigecycline during pregnancy may harm the fetus, so if a patient becomes pregnant while taking it, they need to understand this potential risk to the baby.
When tigecycline is used during the later half of pregnancy, infancy, or childhood up to 8 years old, it might cause lasting teeth discoloration (yellow-gray-brown).
Using tigecycline alone in people with complicated abdominal infections due to a visible hole in the intestines requires careful attention.
Like some other antibacterial drugs, tigecycline 50 mg use might encourage the growth of non-responsive organisms, including fungi. Patients should be closely watched while on this treatment, and if there’s an additional infection, suitable steps should be taken.
