Description

Somatropin injection is a recombinant human growth hormone (HGH) used to treat children with growth failure due to GHD, short stature associated with Turner syndrome, short stature associated with Noonan syndrome, and short stature born SGA with no catch-up growth by the age of 2-4 years.

Somatropin is also used to treat adults with either adult or childhood-onset GHD.

Dosage and Side Effects

Subcutaneous administration of the indicated dose of Somatropin Injection is advised.

  • Pediatric GHD: The recommended dose is 0.024 to 0.034 mg/kg/day, 6 to 7 times a week.

  • Noonan Syndrome: The recommended dose is up to 0.066 mg/kg/day.

  • Turner Syndrome: The recommended dose is up to 0.067 mg/kg/day.

  • SGA: The recommended dose is up to 0.067 mg/kg/day.

  • Adult GHD: The recommended dose is 0.004 mg/kg/day to be increased as tolerated to not more than 0.016 mg/kg/day after around 6 weeks, or a starting dose of around 0.2 mg/day (range, 0.15-0.30 mg/day) increased gradually every 30-60 days by increments of round 0.1 to 0.2 mg daily. Injection sites should always be rotated to avoid lipoatrophy.

The most commonly reported side effects due to Somatropin hgh include: headaches, injection site reactions/rashes and lipoatrophy.

Warning and Precautions

  • Fatalities have been reported in pediatric patients with Prader-Willi syndrome following the initiation of somatropin therapy, particularly in those presenting severe obesity, a history of sleep apnea or upper airway obstruction, or an undiagnosed respiratory infection.

  • Before commencing treatment with somatropin recombinant growth hormone in Prader-Willi syndrome patients, it’s crucial to assess them for signs of upper airway obstruction and sleep apnea. Additionally, individuals under this therapy should undergo effective weight management and regular evaluation for any signs or symptoms of respiratory infection, warranting prompt and aggressive treatment.

  • Regular monitoring is essential for patients with a history of growth hormone deficiency (GHD) due to an intracranial neoplasm. This aims to track any progression or recurrence of the tumor during somatropin hormone treatment.

  • Initiation of somatropin treatment requires careful evaluation for potential neoplasm development. Patients should be closely examined for increased growth or potential malignant changes in pre-existing nevi.

  • Patients with preexisting type-1/2 diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose tolerance should be meticulously monitored during somatropin therapy. Adjustments to antihyperglycemic drugs might be necessary upon initiating somatropin treatment in these individuals.

  • Routine funduscopic examination is recommended before starting somatropin hgh to rule out preexisting papilledema and periodically during therapy. If papilledema is observed during treatment, discontinuation of the therapy is advised.

  • For patients with multiple hormone deficiencies, close monitoring of standard hormonal replacement therapy is essential while on somatropin medication.

  • Individuals with Turner syndrome should undergo thorough assessment for ear-related issues, especially otitis media, as they have a higher susceptibility to ear and hearing disorders. Somatropin use might potentially increase the occurrence of otitis media in patients with Turner syndrome.

  • Repeated subcutaneous administration of somatropin at the same site for an extended duration may lead to tissue atrophy. To prevent this, it’s advisable to rotate the injection site.
