Description

Hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) is prepared from human plasma collected from donors with a high titre of antibodies to the hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBsAg). HBIG is used for post-exposure prophylaxis in the following situations, in the prevention of hepatitis B in case of accidental exposure, and prevention of hepatitis B in the newborn. HBIG provides passive immunization for those who are exposed to the hepatitis B virus from different sources. Hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) administration decreases the infection rate.

Dosage and Side Effects

Hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) contains no preservative and the recommended dosage should be administered by either intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) route, depending on the preparation. HBIG should be given within two weeks (14 days) of exposure to the hepatitis B virus. The half-life of Hepatitis B immunoglobulin is around 3 weeks. In lieu of a booster administration of Hepatitis B immunoglobulin, a hepatitis B vaccination is started at the time of the initial HBIG use, thus providing protection for a longer period of time.

The most common side effects of Hepatitis B Immune Globulin (HBIG) are allergic reactions, muscle pain, back pain, general feeling of discomfort, nausea, headaches, and pain or bleeding at the injection site.

Warning and Precautions

  • People known to have had an anaphylactic or serious systemic reaction to human globulin should not receive Hepatitis B Immune Globulin (Human) or any other human immune globulin. People who are deficient in IgA have the potential to produce antibodies against IgA and anaphylactic reactions.

  • Hepatitis B immunoglobulin is developed from human plasma. Products made from human plasma may carry a risk of transmitting infectious agents (such as viruses) and, theoretically, the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) agent.

  • Vaccination with live virus vaccines (such as MMR) should be deferred until approximately three months after administration of Hepatitis B immunoglobulin.

  • Immune globulins like Hepatitis-B Immunoglobulin may impair the effectiveness of certain live virus vaccines such as rubella (German measles), measles, mumps and varicella (chicken pox). Discuss with your doctor in case you have been recently vaccinated.

  • Do not use hepatitis b immunoglobulin (HBIG) in patients with a known or previous history of allergic reactions to blood products and in those deficient in IgA, a specific sort of blood protein.
