Description

Prescription antiviral drug Foscarnet sodium Injection stops some viruses from proliferating within the body. It’s employed for:

  • Treatment for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients with cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis.
  • Treatment of immunocompromised patients’ (those with compromised immune systems) aciclovir-resistant herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections.

Dosage and Side Effects

Foscarnet injection should only be given through a vein, either using a central line or directly into peripheral veins. If administered through peripheral veins, Foscarnet 24 mg/mL injection should be diluted with glucose 5% or normal saline to a concentration of 12 mg/mL right before use. Foscarnet 24mg/ml in a 250 ml solution can be given directly through a central vein without dilution.

For CMV Retinitis: Foscarnet injection can be given intermittently for 2-3 weeks, every 8 hours at a dose of 60 mg/kg. The infusion time for this dose should not be less than an hour.

After initial treatment, Foscarnet injection is given daily for 7 days a week at a dose determined by kidney function, ranging from 90-120 mg/kg/day. The dose should start at 90 mg/kg and can be increased to 120 mg/kg if needed due to disease progression and tolerance of the lower dose.

For HSV Infections: Foscarnet injection is given at a dose of 40 mg/kg every 8 hours over 60 minutes. Treatment continues until complete healing, typically around 2 to 3 weeks.

The effectiveness of Foscarnet injection maintenance therapy for aciclovir-resistant HSV infections is not well established.

Common side effects of Foscarnet Sodium injection include fever, flu-like symptoms, chest pain, headache, back pain, vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea.

Warning and Precautions

  • Coming into contact with Foscarnet injection might cause irritation or a burning feeling on your skin or eyes. If this happens accidentally, rinse the area with cold water right away.

  • Foscarnet Sodium Injection isn’t recommended for people on hemodialysis because the right dosage isn’t known. Be cautious using it if your kidneys aren’t working well. Your doctor should check your kidney function often while you’re on this treatment.

  • To lower the risk of kidney problems, make sure to drink enough fluids. Your doctor will watch your kidneys closely, especially if you already have kidney issues or take other meds that could affect them.

  • Avoid using Foscarnet injection if you have trouble handling a high salt intake, especially if you have heart issues. Your doctor will keep an eye on your electrolytes, like calcium and magnesium, before and during treatment to make sure they’re balanced.

  • If you have heart conditions or any issues with your heart rhythm or electrolyte levels, your doctor will monitor you carefully because Foscarnet injection could increase the chance of heart rhythm problems.

  • Seizures have been linked to changes in minerals and electrolytes with Foscarnet injection. Your doctor will watch for any signs and can give you supplements if needed.

  • Foscarnet injection might cause irritation in the genital area. Good hygiene is important to prevent this. If you experience any discomfort, talk to your doctor.

  • Avoid using Foscarnet injection if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding as its effects in these situations aren’t known. If you can have children, use effective contraception during treatment and for up to 6 months after. Men on this treatment should avoid fathering a child during this time too.
