Description

The Tegafur plus Gimeracil + Oteracil combination medication is used with cisplatin, the oral combination medication is used to treat advanced stomach or gastric cancer in adults.

Dosage and Side Effects

The prescribed doses of Furmecil Capsule and cisplatin should be calculated based on the body surface area.

For Furmecil: The usual oral dose is 25 mg/m2 (measured as tegafur content) twice daily, taken with water either an hour before or after a meal. This cycle lasts for 3 weeks, followed by a one-week break, constituting one treatment cycle. This cycle repeats every 4 weeks (28 days). The capsule should not be opened, crushed, or chewed since it’s a cytotoxic agent and may harm healthy cells upon contact.

Cisplatin is recommended at a dose of 75 mg/m2 through intravenous infusion once every 4 weeks when used with Furmecil. It should be stopped after 6 cycles, but if discontinued earlier, Furmecil treatment can continue when restart criteria are met without stopping Furmecil.

Commonly reported side effects when Furmecil and cisplatin are combined include neutropenia (low neutrophil count), anemia (low red blood cell count), and fatigue (feeling tired).

Warning and Precautions

  • Furmecil 20 mg capsules are used for cancer and should only be given by a qualified doctor. Patients may need prescriptions for medications to manage side effects like nausea and diarrhea. If patients get worse or have severe side effects, treatment should be stopped.

  • Patients on Furmecil with cisplatin need frequent tests for blood, kidneys, liver, and minerals in their blood. Bone marrow problems, like low white cells, platelets, and red cells, have been seen. Low counts need close attention for infections and bleeding risks.

  • Before starting Furmecil, doctors need to check if patients have hepatitis B. For patients with diarrhea, dehydration can be risky and needs proper care. Treatment should be stopped if dehydration gets severe.

  • People with severe kidney problems should avoid Furmecil because it might cause more side effects and higher exposure to 5-FU. When Furmecil and phenytoin are taken together, phenytoin levels might increase, so more frequent monitoring is needed.

  • Both male and female patients should use birth control during and after Furmecil treatment. Furmecil isn’t safe for breastfeeding, as it might be in breast milk and could pose a risk to babies.

  • Furmecil can cause dizziness, fatigue, blurred vision, and nausea, affecting the ability to drive or use machines.
