Tenofovir Alafenamide (TAF) Tablet is a once-daily tablet, supplied under the generic brand name HepBest. It is a hepatitis B virus (HBV) nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor and is used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults and pediatric patients aged 12 years and older with compensated liver disease.

Dosage and Side Effects

The recommended dosage of tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) in adults and pediatric patients aged 12 years and older is one 25 mg tablet taken by mouth (orally) once daily with food. Prior to initiation of therapy with tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), test patients for HIV infection. This therapeutic medicine alone should not be used in those with HIV infection.

Warning and Precautions

  • Stopping anti-hepatitis B treatment, including Tenofovir (TAF), may be responsible for causing serious acute exacerbations of hepatitis B infection.   • Cases of renal impairment, including proximal renal tubulopathy (PRT), acute renal failure, and Fanconi syndrome may occur with TAF-containing products including tenofovir 25 mg. Patients taking TAF prodrugs who have impaired renal function and patients taking nephrotoxic agents, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, are at increased probability of developing renal-related side effects.
  • Before or when initiating HepBest and during treatment with this medication on a clinically apt schedule, evaluate serum creatinine, urine glucose, estimated creatinine clearance, and urine protein in all patients. In those with chronic kidney disease, also evaluate serum phosphorus.
  • Lactic acidosis and serious hepatomegaly with steatosis, including dealy cases, may occur with the use of nucleoside analogs, including tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), another prodrug of tenofovir, alone or along with other existing antiretrovirals.
